The 7-Night Ritual: One Small Step at a Time

By the Dewmoire Journal team (how we write our guides) · Published · Last updated

The short answer

This is the five-minute overnight routine, stretched across a week. Night 1 is just cleansing. Night 2 adds moisture. Then a patch, satin for your hair, a cool step for the morning, a pillowcase wash, and a night off. Use what you already own. By Night 7 you will know which steps are worth keeping.

Key takeaways

  • One new step per night. There is nothing to catch up on.
  • You need a gentle cleanser and a moisturizer. Everything else is optional.
  • Every step works with products already in your bathroom.
  • Night 7 is a rest night on purpose.

Disclosure: This article is published by Dewmoire, a beauty brand that sells some of the products mentioned. The steps work with any brand.

Before you start

You need two things: a gentle cleanser and a moisturizer you like. Everything else on this page is an extra.

Put a clean towel by the sink and a clean pillowcase on the bed. If you use a prescription or active product, keep using it the way you were told to. This plan sits around it; it does not replace it.

Do the nights in order if you can. If a night gets away from you, start again the next evening where you left off. Nobody is checking.

The seven nights

Night 1: Cleanse gently

Wash off makeup, sunscreen and the day with a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water. Rinse, then pat dry with a clean towel. Do not rub, and do not use water hot enough to leave your face feeling tight. That is the whole night.

If you want ours, it is the Clearbloom Hyaluronic Cleansing Gel (160 ml, $22.95). The cleanser by your sink does the same job tonight.

Night 2: Add the moisture layer

Cleanse the way you did last night. Then smooth on your usual moisturizer. If you like a gel layer, this is its night: a thin layer, then bed. Keep any product you use as directed in its usual place.

Our gel is the Meadowdew Cucumber & Aloe Gel (100 g, $22.95), a light leave-on layer. It is an option, not a requirement.

Night 3: Patch, don't pick

If there is a surface spot you keep touching, tonight it gets covered. Cleanse, let your skin dry, and press a hydrocolloid patch over the spot before any moisturizer goes on. It covers the spot and absorbs fluid while you sleep, and it keeps your fingers off. Peel it off in the morning and rinse.

Any hydrocolloid patches work. Ours are Hush Dots, 144 in a pack, $28.69.

Night 4: Put satin between your hair and the pillow

Finger-comb your hair or brush it gently. Then either tie it loosely with a soft scrunchie or leave it down on a satin pillowcase, so it glides instead of catching. If you want waves by morning, wrap slightly damp hair — damp, not soaking — around a heatless curler instead.

The Moonveil Satin Sleep Set ($40.17) is a pillowcase, eye mask, hair band and hair tie in satin with a silk-look finish; it is not real silk. The Dreamcurl Satin Band ($40.17) is the wrap, if curls are the point. A smooth pillowcase you already own counts for tonight.

Night 5: Set up a cool morning

Before bed, fill an ice mould and put it in the freezer, or put a pack of under-eye gels in the fridge. In the morning, after cleansing, glide the frozen mould over your face for a minute or two with light pressure, or rest the gels under your eyes while the coffee brews. Follow each tool's own directions, and skip this step on irritated skin.

Ours are the Frostkiss Ice Roller ($45.91), a silicone mould you fill with water and freeze, and Dawnpetal Eye Gels (10 pairs, $45.91). Chilled spoons or gels you already have are a fair stand-in for a first try.

Night 6: Wash the pillowcase

Strip the pillowcase and wash it tonight, so a clean one is on the bed. For satin, keep it simple: cold water, a gentle wash and mild detergent, no bleach, then air dry. If yours is the Moonveil set, hand wash it cold. While things are out, wipe down any rollers and toss used patches straight in the bin.

It is not a glamorous night. It is the one that makes the other six feel better.

Night 7: Rest

Cleanse, moisturize, and stop there. No patch unless you want one, no wrap, nothing new. While you are getting ready for bed, think about which steps were easy enough that you barely noticed them. Those are your routine. Keep them, and let the rest go.

Busy nights and sensitive skin

The short version of this whole plan is two steps: cleanse and moisturize. On a bad night, do those and go to bed. The longer version will still be here next week.

  • Add one new product at a time, with a few days in between, so you know what suits you.
  • Patch test anything new on a small area first.
  • Do not sleep in makeup, even on the rest night.
  • Keep tools clean; they sit against your skin and hair for hours.

This is general beauty and self-care information, not medical advice. If you have a skin condition or concern, check with a board-certified dermatologist.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to buy anything for this week?

No. You need a gentle cleanser and a moisturizer you already like. Every other step has a use-what-you-own version, and the plan says so at each step.

What if I miss a night?

Pick up where you left off. The order matters more than the calendar, and there is nothing to catch up on.

Can I use my own products instead of Dewmoire's?

Yes. Every step was written that way. If you use a prescription or active product, keep following its directions; this plan does not replace them.

What should I do if my skin is sensitive?

Keep it to cleanse and moisturize. Add one new product at a time, with a few days in between, patch test on a small area first, and skip cooling tools on irritated skin.

When does the patch go on?

Right after cleansing, on clean, dry skin, before moisturizer. Peel it off in the morning and rinse the area.
